Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful recruits volunteers, Site Captains, Area Managers and local sponsors to foster unity and strengthen community bonds through beautification and improvement efforts across Hillsborough County. For more than twenty years, this locally activated community improvement program brings the power of volunteers and sponsors together to inspire change and build sustainable, vibrant communities.

The theme – Clean Your Block Party– is a call to action to create more sustainable communities by focusing volunteer efforts on activities that impact individuals in need, aesthetic community improvements and environmental impact. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and any individual, family, school, group, place of worship, business or government entity can coordinate or participate in an average of 80 simultaneous projects around the area.

Thank you to all our volunteers sponsors and partners for helping to make this event a huge success! Our almost 5,000 volunteers cleaned over 80 locations removing close to 90,000 pounds of litter and debris from our waterways. Check out our Facebook page for videos and photos from the event.

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful presents the Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup as part of the International Coastal Cleanup at various sites along the Hillsborough River, Alafia River, Little Manatee River, Lake Thonotosassa and other waterways throughout Hillsborough County. Unlike a typical litter removal event, the annual Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup offers the opportunity for volunteers to engage in vital international research activities by taking on the role of “Scientist for a Day.”

With a specific focus on water-based natural resource protection and activism, volunteers collect items and record the data to identify the number and type of littered items, the overall tonnage of debris removed from each site and the amount of recyclable materials diverted from ending up in our landfills. This information is used to determine future requirements for cleanup initiatives, assess projects that are needed in the area and develop awareness of these needs within the local communities who share these waterways. Data is shared with Keep America Beautiful, the Ocean Conservancy as well as local officials to help provide a local and global perspective.

Volunteers are invited to share their photos during the event. Connect with #KeepTBB or @KeepTBB on Twitter and Instagram and like Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful on Facebook. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful will use the best pictures in our future publications.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, designers, models, Paul Mitchell students and all who helped to make the 4th annual Trashy Flashy Fashion Show a success. We had 53 amazing designs walk down the runway showing how trendy trash can be.

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is proud to present the Trashy Flashy Fashion Show in honor of America Recycles Day. The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show is a hands-on educational experience that encourages students/designers to integrate waste reduction practices into wearable fashion. This artistic expression combines environmental learning with fashion concepts and techniques. The environmentally sustainable high fashion designs featured in the show are made from at least 75% recycled materials and illustrate to the audience how trendy trash can be. The fashion show will challenge individuals to think outside the bin.

The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show focuses on the importance of waste reduction through “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” These waste reduction concepts are incorporated into the designs through the use of upcycling and repurposing. The objective of this fashion show is to allow students to take what they have learned either in their classroom or through the education presentations of Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful and upcycle their waste into a wearable piece of art to be showcased down the runway. These high fashion pieces result when students intertwine fashion and art with sustainability.

This fashion show not only promotes recycling, upcycling and repurposing but it gives the students and the audience the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint through the realization of how much refuse they leave behind. Local designers, artists, residents and students in an art or design program as well as environmental and science courses participate in this annual event. This fashion show intrigues the audience through the creativity and uniqueness that go into these wearable works of art. The Trashy Flashy Fashion Show allows students to see how trash impacts their everyday lifestyle, only the designs do not show the disgust of trash but the beauty of something new and innovative.
